A New Earth: Awakening
by Eckhart Tolle
Reviewed by Craig Shafer
The human ego causes each of us, and thus the world, great distress and dysfunction, says spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle in his recent book A New Earth. Tolle, who is also the author of the bestseller The Power of Now, examines in A New Earth the present state of the planet (not so good) and the perils that we face in the future (many). Not satisfied to merely examine the problem, he offers an alternative to dysfunction, suggesting mankind transcend ego-based states of consciousness and recognize that peace and happiness can only come from within ourselves.
Borrowing from the great religious world traditions (chiefly Buddhism), Tolle presents his views with logic and clarity and is largely convincing, though some people with a deeper understanding of Buddhist thought criticize A New Earth as being a synthesis of greater works. Published in 2005, A New Earth has recently become an Oprah’s Book Club selection, introducing a new range of readers to the power of dissolving the ego, many who may even join Oprah’s online classes on this book. Once again, Eckhart Tolle delivers an enormous hit.
